Aim To Save Thousands A Year By Consolidating Student Loans

Having more than one student loan, each with its own payment date, its own payment amount, its own interest rate, and its own terms, is quite a lot to juggle every month, especially when a person is just starting out in life and must keep a pretty tight budget. Consolidation of all your student loans into one package can simplify things immensely. When you are considering a student loan consolidation package, it would behoove you to scout around for at least five, hopefully more, institutions that offer student loan consolidation. The more you do this research the more likely you are to save yourself thousands of dollars in the long run. While you are hunting, a number of targets should be kept in mind.

 Target 1: One Lender

Think of it, one payment, in one month, to one lender. Also, one interest rate and one maturity date (when the loan is paid off). And your consolidation loan will probably incur payments far less than the sum of your multiple loans. On top of all that, this is good time to get any co-signers off the contracts and other conditions, such as late fees will probably be better. Some websites offer a service wherein you fill out one application and interested student loan consolidators will bid for your business. Be sure to check the reputation of any vendor before you agree to do business with them.

 Target 2: Credit Score

School loan consolidation can have a very positive affect on your credit rating. You will have paid off a number of creditors in full, and by meeting your monthly consolidation payments in a timely manner, you are adding some great marks onto your credit history.

 Target 3: Defer Debt

After college or university, if you enter military service you can get a deferment of up to thirty-six months before you need to start paying on your loan. The same is true if you enter a masters or doctorate program. If your studies lead you into the medical or dental disciplines, payments can be deferred for up to forty-eight months.

 Target 4: Loan Duration

While you are negotiating the terms of your student loan consolidation, focus on your long term and short term plans. If you extend the repayment period, you will have more cash to meet your needs presently, but you will also end up paying a lot more in interest over the duration of the loan. If you choose larger payments, you will put the loan to rest earlier and pay much less interest. Either way, try not to put too much burden on yourself right now, nor in the future.

 Target 5: Wisdom

As mentioned above, you must have a pretty well laid out financial plan for your future. Is a marriage, perhaps with children, something you want to consider? Perhaps you want to travel a bit after being graduated. When and where do you want to retire? How will you meet these goals? You may want to speak to a financial adviser, or pick up one of the self-help e-books or real books you can find in many bookstores or online.

 Hit the Bull's Eye

At any rate, while student loan consolidation is a great relief financially and personally, it needs to fold into your overall financial and personal goals. Do not overwhelm yourself financially at the present time, and do not put an overwhelming burden on your future. Keeping the information above in mind when you consider a student loan consolidation, should keep you on target and ready to hit the bull's eye of a financially rewarding life.

A Creative Way to Payoff Student Loans and Build Wealth

Is it difficult to payoff student loans as a new graduate? Many of you would say yes. Generally, college is an idealistic time in life with expectations of making big changes in the world. Perhaps you grew up believing in the American Dream and you still do! That is OK because it is still there for you. You've gotten a good education that cost you a relatively large amount of money - an average of $20,000 to $40,000 in student loans. What's next?

Student Loans Repayment

After college you expect to get the job of your dreams and eventually start the process to payoff student loans. The downturn in the economy has made it harder for recent college graduates to find jobs. Don't be alarm; there are alternative ways to build wealth. However, you must begin think outside the box and consider new and creative ways of doing this.

If you have any federal loans, even if they came through a private lender, you can consolidate them through the Federal Direct Consolidation Loan Program. This option offers different repayment schedules that are meant to help you take control of your debt and start to make payment through one source.

Most importantly, do not default on your loans. Defaulting on loans can make your life much more difficult. Employers who run credit checks on prospective employees may pass you over if they see you have defaulted. However, there are options to avoid going into default. If you qualify, you can get forbearance - temporarily reduces or suspends your regular payments; or deferment - no payments during the approved period and no interest is accrued on federally funded loans. Check out these options for more details as it may vary based on the lender and type of loan.

Building Wealth

If finding a job or making enough money to payoff student loans is an issue, you might want to think outside the box or even throw the box away. There are a number of ways to make money other than working a JOB. With a job you trade your time for money which makes it difficult to significantly decrease the time it takes to repay your loans. You should make loan repayment a top priority in your budget. The quicker you can repay it in full, the more you will be able to enjoy the increased income your education brings.

The secret strategy of wealthy people is developing multiple streams of income. Building multiple streams of income is one of the best wealth building techniques that you can employ in your life. Successful entrepreneurs, such as Donald Trump, have several business opportunities in their portfolios. Students or newly graduates can replicate this same strategy on a smaller scale.

One of the easiest ways to get started is to use the internet for a home-based business. You can make money online using Google search engine and a blog to create opportunities for passive income. This is a great way to build wealth and payoff student loans at the same time.

How I will Pay My Student Loans

Student loans are a pretty hot issue these days. On the one hand, many people believe that those of us who borrowed the money and went to school with it should be held responsible for its repayment. At the same time, many people with large student loan debts feel they have been given a bad deal. When they took out the original loans (at 18 years old) they didn't know that the job market was going to be horrible when they graduated, or that they'd be stuck working at a fast food restaurant to dedicate their entire checks to loan payments. They feel they've been preyed upon by lenders and that their lives are a modern form of indentured servitude.

I used to be in the camp that thought that student loans were a scam and that there should be some sort of forgiveness. I graduated with about $75,000 worth of loan debt, and was lucky to find a job right away. Unfortunately, that job paid about $30,000 a year... not exactly making it easy to meet my monthly payments.

What changed my mind was when I realized that a particular hobby I had picked up could help me pay my student loan bills each month.

I'd had a kindling interest in web design for a few years, but just never found the time to pursue it. After I finished school and was working regular hours, though, I began to pick up on it more and more.

And I realized how absolutely SIMPLE it really could be. After studying a little, I found that putting up a basic site could be done in just an hour or so. And then, that basic site template could be reused over and over to make as many sites as I wanted.

The real breakthrough came when I found out that Google and Amazon would actually PAY me to put their ads on my site. I knew I had struck gold, and I haven't looked back since.

Since I started making these sites I haven't made a single loan payment out of my paycheck. Every dollar that goes to student loans comes from the sites I make.

My hope is that being able to pay student loan bills is just the beginning of my journey into making money on the internet. The long term goal I have set for myself is to quit my job by March 8, 2013 and dedicate myself full time to my internet business.

Responsibility is a value that is particularly important to me. Although I still feel like student loan companies are predatorily lending to nave kids, I do think that it is my responsibility to pay off the debt I have amassed. And now I feel like I am meeting that responsibility. By spending less than 2 hours every day this project is yielding over $500 per month.

In the end, no matter what your opinion of the student loan industry may be, there are ways for those of us in this contemporary servitude to break free from the financial chains and live lives we're proud of.

Top Six Tips For Landing The Best Student Loan Consolidation Interest Rates

As time passes, managing student loan debt can seem insurmountable as life changes, and buying a home, affording transportation, raising a family, come into the game of life along with the requisite cash flow. Having different lenders, with different interest rates and terms of repayment, is at least a financial inconvenience, if not a financial disaster. Student loan consolidation with the best interest rates should be your next goal.

Get a Good Rate and Consolidate

To avoid ending up as a bad credit risk, wrecking the monthly budget, and sacrificing peace of mind, many graduates would benefit by consolidating their student loans. With student loan consolidation, a once monthly, affordable payment, at an interest rate that is comfortable, and a duration that is doable, can become a budget-saving, mind-easing reality.

Calculating for Consolidating

If you have a number of private student loans, you will have to consolidate your student loans with a private consolidation lender. Your interest rate will be calculated based on a combining of the current prime rate, or other standard index, and an additional margin (or spread) determined by your credit rating (FICO).

Five Tips to Qualify for the Best Rate

If you do choose to consolidate your various student loans, you will want to do all within your power to qualify for the best rate. This could save you thousands of dollars over the duration of the loan. Following are five tips to assist you in achieving that goal.

1. Credit Report

Get your credit reports from all three of big three credit bureaus (Experian, Trans Union, Equifax). This can be done for a reasonable fee over the Web. The rate for your student loan consolidation will be determined in part by your credit score.

2. Weighted Rate

Then you need to figure the weighted average of your interest rate calculated over all of your student loans. The resulting calculation will give you a rating you will try to outdo while you shop. Calculators are available on the Web. Calculating your weighted rate is important to get a student consolidation loan at the best possible rate.

3. Research Lenders

Do an online search in an effort to compile ten different lenders that specialize in student loan consolidations. Do not be tempted to restrict your search to less than that. Your chance for getting a good deal increases with the amount of lenders you research. Being lazy or lax can cost you thousands.

4. Research Log

Start a research log. As you hold one lender to the next, keep meticulous notes, maybe in Excel, that includes the lenders name, a name or contact there, useful phone numbers, rates that they publish, the quality of the website, and even record your gut feelings about the business.

5. Five Lenders

You are now ready to make applications with the top five on your list. Make sure the numbers are identical across all the five loan applications to facilitate your shopping. Do this with five, no less, or again, you are cheating yourself.

So, knowing what interest rate you want to target, how well you do your research, how well you home in on the right offer, could all help lower your monthly payments by three figures, maybe more.

Studnet Loan Consolidate

A consolidation loan is just what it sounds like. With a loan consolidation program your high interest student loans are combined into one sometimes lower interest loan, with one lower monthly payment, that you need to make to only one lender.

Consolidation Loans are much like the same idea of refinancing a mortgage, or taking a home equity loan to consolidate credit card debt or pay off other high interest loans. Just about every kind of Federal Student Loan qualifies for loan consolidation including; FFELP, FISL, Perkins, Health Professional Student Loans, NSL, HEAL, Guaranteed Student Loans and Direct loans. In some instances loan consolidation is even available for private education loans as well. Loan consolidation is offered for student loans for either graduate or undergraduate schools.

Interest rates on consolidated student loans are calculated by taking a weighted average of the loans being consolidated, and are then rounded up to the nearest 1/8 of a percent. The new interest rate cannot exceed 8.25%.

So for example let's say that a student has a couple of Stafford Loans that were originated on or after July of 2006. The fixed interest rates on these loans would be 6.8%. If only these loans are consolidated the new resulting interest rate would be 6.875%, a statistically insignificant increase, but the student would gain the advantages of only having to pay a single lender, and often gets extended time for pay back.

In the case of consolidating mixed loan products, like say a combination of Perkins Loans and Stafford Loans, the resulting interest rates will always wind up somewhere in between. The weighted average will give you interest rates that are lower than your highest rated loans, but that will also be higher than your lowest loan products. So again the overall increase or decrease in your interest rates will be negligible the true advantage of loan consolidation is not necessarily in lowering interest rates, but in actually lowering monthly payments, and extending the term of your loans, making your student loan debt more manageable, and less likely to result in default.

Financing an education can be extremely expensive these days and it is more common to have a student leave school in debt than not in debt. In most cases this debt runs into the tens of thousands of dollars, and when it is private student loans the interest will accrue while you are in school and get added on to the loan after you graduate. The good news is that you have six months after graduation to get a job and decide to start consolidating private student loans, or paying them back one at a time. There is a lot to consider when you are thinking about consolidating student loans, and you will find a few different ways to consolidate your loans that you may want to take advantage of.

Unlike federal student loans that have interest rate caps on consolidation loans, consolidating private student loans will put you at the mercy of the current loan rates. In some cases this can be a bad thing, and in other cases this can be the best financial thing to happen to you in your young life. Many financial institutions offer programs to help students consolidate education loans that carry high interest rates but extended payback terms. You can get a consolidation loan that would stretch as long as 20 years, and that can help lower your payments.

If you did not take out a large amount of private student loans, then consolidating private student loans may be a bit easier for you. One of your options is to pursue a secured private loan to consolidate your student loans. A secured private loan requires collateral supplied by the borrower that needs to be owned in full by the borrower, and it can be unusual for a new college graduate to have that much personal property. However, if you are able to get a secured personal loan then you can pay off your private student loans at a significant discount. If you were responsible with your finances in college then you may even qualify for an unsecured personal loan which is a loan that requires no collateral. Explore your borrowing options before resigning yourself to one solution.

Consolidating your student loans can lower your monthly payments and make paying your loans back significantly easier. If you are able to find a consolidation loan that is at a lower interest rate than your individual loan then you will be consolidating private student loans and saving money on interest payments for the overall cost of the loans at the same time.

Before you begin consolidation make sure you take a long look at the loans you are trying to consolidate. If you cannot get a better deal on a consolidation loan than you have with your individual loans then consolidation may not be your best move. If you got your private student loans at a time when interest rates were low and you graduated when interest rates were on the rise, then consolidating your loans may cost you more money than it would cost you to just keep them as they are. Keep in mind the other advantage to loan consolidation is that there are no fees or costs associated with consolidation, ever. If any service is charging any kind of upfront fees for loan consolidation, they are likely a scam and should be avoided.

Student or parent borrowers can apply for a consolidation loans, however parent loans cannot be combined with the student borrower loans, only loans to the same individual can be consolidated. But of course a parent borrower and their students can consolidate their own loans separately.

Even loans that are in default but with satisfactory repayment arrangements, may qualify for loan consolidation.

First, look at your overall credit. Do you have good credit? If not, you may want to rethink the student loan. Sometimes a person with bad or damaged credit is ineligible for a student loan. Essentially, this is dependent upon the specific type of student loan you are wanting. In some cases, when you apply for a student loan of a specific type, your credit report or score may not even be a factor. It is for this reason that you should conduct full research on the all the options you may have.

Of course, there are other student loan consolidation programs available including the Direct Student Loan Consolidation, which requires a borrower to have at least one Direct Student Loan, a verifiable income, and no adverse credit to qualify. Another type is the Private Student Loan Consolidation, which, though not as attractive as the Federal Student Loan Consolidation, is feasible for the former student who is set in a job and has a means of support. These loans run for up to twenty, sometimes thirty years, depending on the lender. Though a somewhat higher interest rate averaging from 6-10%, they are still more attractive than the average consumer loan and allow the borrower to get from under his or her student loans and begin life as a tax-paying citizen.

Are you going to work? This is a critical factor in deciding how much you'll need and working will allow you to take out much less in student loans decreasing your debt when you are finished. Additionally, for undergraduates, unless you take out private loans, student loan funding is limited and may not always cover all your expenses depending on the college you decide to go to. You might also qualify for work-study, which also gives you valuable work experience. Unless you're planning on only going to school part-time, I don't suggest working for a full-time job. Your main goal in going to college is to get a good education and working for a full-time job detracts from this opportunity.
